Venus: Part 7

The bell from the glittery toy gets me pumped so I roughly tackle and bite at it as if it’s my prey and the last of my source of food. I would like to be prepared in case of that unlikely event. Wood chips fly in the air as I flip onto my back holding my imaginary prey tight between my paws before tossing it to the other side of the cage. My imaginary prey hits the bars of my abode, causing a startling noise. I notice some of the other animals stir some waking up to make unpleasant noises at me, some angrily yelling for me to go to sleep. Despite their obnoxious complaints, I’m overcome with the sense of achievement. I killed the imaginary prey.

I wrap my mouth around my dead toy and happily carry it into my hammock for safe keeping, the toy jingles as I skip with it. I then return to the food as a reward, I close my eyes to enjoy the tasty sensation in my mouth chewing every piece thoroughly. I hear Lion stir a little and mumble presumably at me. I shift and fix my eyes on him, licking away any residue. He appears to still be in deep slumber. “Lion, Are you awake yet?” I question for my own assurance, surprised by the fact that all of the ruckus didn’t seem to phase him even the slightest. “You’re one heavy sleeper, cat.” I sigh returning to my food.

In the process of filling my belly, my teeth happen to come across a harder chunk of food which causes loud crunching noises to emit from my face. I stop chewing and look around checking for any creature that may be scowling at me. I continue to lightly chew, but every bite is followed by a crunch. I stop chewing once again to quietly observe my surroundings, then start to chew again. I repeat this a couple of times, cringing with every bite I take until the food is no longer crunchy, but mush in my mouth. Dry mush. I cough and switch to my water spout. Even the little metal ball makes a enormous amount of noise throughout the store. I cringe once again, expecting to hear the other animals wake up and scold me for my crepuscular behavior. Like I can help that.

I trot towards my hammock, satisfied with my full stomach. I catch a glimpse of a shadowy figure slink by my abode. Instantly, Zelly comes to mind. I would believe that she is put up in a kennel the way Lion is, they are the same species after all. I scan the surrounding area, but nothing. After a minute of deafening silence, a blast of noise comes from the roof of my cage. Squeaks and squawks of scared and/or disapproving animals fill the entire shop. I almost urinate all over myself. My first instinct, of course if to look up and whatever has caused such a disturbance. It is Zelly.

“What is wrong with you?” I question angrily. She glares into my eyes almost soullessly. The shop slowly quiets down and she opens her mouth to speak but nothing comes out. I grow nervous as I begin to feel as much of a prey to her as my toy is to me. “Zelly, stop!” Lion’s voice hesitantly booms from behind. Zelly’s gaze leaves my eyes and fixes onto Lion. I don’t dare to let my eyes leave Zelly in fear of what she may be capable of, regardless of the bars that separate us. Zelly scoffs at Lion’s attempt to intervene, her gaze is once again met with mine. “What do you want with me?” I ask, still standing my ground. Zelly chuckles at me, perhaps she can hear the shakiness in my voice?

I hear Lion lightly growl as Zelly begins to flick her tail aggressively with eyes still staring into my soul. Curiosity gets the best of me, and my other questions never seemed to register, so I break the silence between Zelly and I with another one, “Why are you not caged like the rest of us in here?” Zelly’s eyes seem to light up. “You think you’re the cutest thing in here, don’t you?” Zelly asks, avoiding my question. My face screams confusion when questioned by this topic. I don’t even know what I look like. I decide to mess with Zelly, “You think I’m cute?” I question rolling onto my back, I bat my eyes at her. Zelly looks up away from me irritated or embarrassed, or both. She pulls her ears back. Lion laughs behind me.

I return to my feet and watch her, not knowing what to expect. Zelly’s ears stand up before she answers, “Human dude may be fond of you, but you will never take my place. Out of everyone living here, I’m his favorite.” Zelly gets comfortable atop of my cage. “I’m not stuck in a dirty cage like the rest of you guys because I’m special. He’s aware of how much more intelligent I am than anyone here, especially the two of you.” Zelly finishes. “Ouch!” Lion exclaims sarcastically. Zelly sits up and launches herself onto a higher surface and strides away. I don’t let my gaze leave her direction until she’s completely out of sight. I meet eyes with Lion who’s smiling like an idiot. “Who pissed in her catnip?” Lion laughs. I can’t help but giggle some at his ridiculous remark.

“How can someone be so angry and protective of a human? Of all things.” I ask Lion seriously. I can’t grasp how she can be so stuck up. “I wouldn't worry about it if I were you, she has always been like that. Mostly when I first arrived because she wasn’t the only cat anymore.” Lion explains. “Hm.” I reply, taking in the little piece of information. Lion snorts, “Yeah, she never really let that grudge towards me die out. I’m sure that she’ll get over whatever it is once you’re here for some time.” Lion adds.
