There’s not as much room as what I am used to having. I don’t think I like this. “How do you like this?” human dude questions with a smile, as if he just did some huge favor for me. I try not to even acknowledge his presence. He turns on his heels and I watch him quietly stride in front of the other cages and tanks of what I assume to also be unconsenting guests. Some of the other creatures make noises to the human dude. The variety of noise makes it a bit difficult to clearly listen in on what’s being said, but the vibe I do get from it seems frantic.
Human dude makes his way behind a counter, I hear the jingle of keys, the squeak of a door opening, then the flick of a lightswitch. It’s not entirely dark in here, thanks to the lights emanating from multiple tanks. Everything quiets down once human dude’s car engine fades from outside of the building. I take another good look around now that he’s gone. Though, the feeling of being watched isn't. I move slowly around my new habitat and see that there is a hammock hanging from the top bars. “How nice,” I whisper to myself.
I push my body off from the wood chip bedding into the wobbly hammock. My body sways side to side in the potential bed, I squirm and flip myself to find a suitable sleeping position. The bed slowly rocks itself to a halt, and with that, I fall asleep…
Dreams of being in the prison box come into play as I drift deeper into sleep. The toys are no longer ordinary toys, they’ve transformed into what looks to be two of my brothers. They’re small and toy like but no movement or sign of life, just toy versions of them. The sight of this confuses me and causes my emotions to spiral. I’m now in a panic as I realize the holes that were punched into the box to supply me with air have disappeared. I immediately feel the lack of oxygen and my legs give out. It starts to occur to me that it’s just a dream, this can’t be real. I slump my body into a pile of paper strips in defeat, repeating in my mind that it’s only a dream. I begin to gain the strength to lift my head, the box bursts open and the paper strips, toys representing my brothers, as well as myself, seemingly explode out from the box. There’s no light but I can clearly see everything. Everything’s falling, I’m falling..
I wake up in a panic once I’ve made my landing. I briskly tunnel out of the hammock and tumble onto the wood chips. “I’m so glad that’s over,” I sigh to myself. I make my way to the water bottle but have to stop myself when I remember that i’ve never used this kind of tool to access water. I observe the water dispenser by sniffing it thoroughly. I stand against the bars to sniff the physical bottle being held from the outside of my abode. “I don’t underst-” I think to myself a split second before my nose touches the ball piece. I sneeze and shake my head to get rid of any water that I may have snorted. “Okay, so that’s how it works.” I conclude quietly. I begin to enjoy my first bottled water experience.
I look around for the human dude. It’s apparent that daylight is approaching by looking through the tall, stained windows. “Where is he? I would really appreciate if someone would let me out of here.” I groaned. I stare at the corner I had last saw the human dude. I was probably only looking for a few seconds but it felt like an hour. I get a little irritated and start to eat out of boredom. The food is watered down since my siblings and I have only recently stopped having the delicacies of milk. I have a difficult time trying to choke the food down since it’s been sitting overnight, there’s hardly any moisture left. What else am I going to do though? It’s food and there’s nothing in this cage to play with.

“Pssst..PSSSSTTT!” an unexpected noise comes from behind which causes me to hack on my food. I frantically turn around to find a striped creature standing before the bars of their own cage, the creature is now laughing at me. I feel a bit flustered as I stare at his face, I see something from the corner of my eye; it’s my tail. The fur from my tail has completely fluffed out in all directions. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you at all but..” The creature begins laughing at me once again. “But, what?” I question with a great hint of annoyance in my voice. The creature attempts to stop laughing but ends up giggling instead.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry. You look so silly, I’ve never seen anything like you.” the creature giggles some more, “I’m a cat, but I would prefer you to call me Lion instead. What are you exactly?” I examine the cat some more before answering. He doesn’t appear to be much older than I. I try to lighten up and think of my response, I remember the human lady always referring to us as “ferrets”. “I’m a ferret.” I reply. “Ferret?” Lion repeats to himself. “I’ve never in my life seen or heard of such..Hmm. Ferret.” Lion retreats into some sort of box like bed in the corner of his cage. He seems to be studying the flooring of his cage until his tail flicks and he says, “Let’s be best friends.” He shuts his eyes and relaxes his head as if he already knows my answer and the conversation is over with.
