I decide to play with Lion, forgetting about Zelly. I bounce around as Lion aims to tag me, he acts as though it’s such a challenge but I can clearly see that he’s going easy on me. I don’t want to imagine what those claws and teeth are realistically capable of. We switch off and I begin to test my strength on him jumping into a hug onto his back and gnawing away at his scruff. I flop off as Lion whips around, front paws in the air. “I’ll kill you, ferret.” Lion exclaims almost serious. I watch in horror as his paw comes down onto the top of my head. “Boop!” Lion sings as he lightly taps between my ears then strides away laughing. Needless to say, I’m relieved I’m not dead, although I do feel quite foolish. I laugh at myself and skip in Lion’s direction.
Lights skim over my play area as the glass door open. I flop onto my stomach and roll over belly up, and observe a half-grown human lady with a.. mini human? Perhaps my eyes deceive me by being upside down? I return to my feet and gallop towards the humans for an exceptional view. The human lady, who I presume to be the mini human’s mother is holding onto one of their hands which look to be much smaller than her’s. It’s as if she’s keeping them from running away. Lion approaches and chimes into my ear, “Be wary of... the child.” The mini human continues to gaze in my direction. “Is the human lady leaving it here, for adoption?” I question turning to look at Lion but he has disappeared. Human dude approaches and I’m only now noticing how much older human dude must be. The mother and human dude engage in obscure conversation.
I hesitantly turn to meet with the eyes of the ‘child’ once again, I feel on edge as I imagine that mini human in the pin trying to playfully tackle Lion and I, foaming at the mouth. Just as I’m getting an image of the potential scenario in my mind, the human child starts drooling and sticks it’s free hand into their wet food whole. I unintentionally grimace at the sight of it. The child’s gaze hasn’t left my play pin so far and I can see that it is losing patience as it starts to tug at the mother’s hand and bounce around. Muffled noises come from behind the mini human’s slobbery hand. “Please, have a look around Let me know if you need help with anything.” Human dude says in a bold voice allowing the mother to tend to her wired child.
I can’t seem to move away from the bars of my play area as they approach, I can clearly see the excitement on the child’s face the closer they get. I look up at their faces and the expression on the mother’s face is confusing. I cannot tell what she’s thinking but I’m having doubts that it’s anything good. I switch my attention to the mini human who looks so much more pleased to see me, I get an outstanding but rambunctious vibe. I attempt to put on a show for the both of them by attacking and rolling around with a jingly ball. I get such a great feeling when I hear the child laugh and jump up and down. I’m caught up in my play with the ball when I hear the child’s mother make a snide remark about the amount of energy I present. I then hear the child whine a little as the mother adds, “We need something less active, sweetie.”
My feelings become a little bruised as they make their way to the tanks of smaller, less exciting animals. The child quiets down and becomes distracted with whatever it is, I lose interest at this point. Lion jumps back into the pin with me from what always seems like nowhere. “So rude.” Lion addresses jokingly. “I feel bad, like I’m the reason the child is upset?” I mention. Lion looks at me and starts to laugh a little, “Don’t take it so seriously, I can tell the child really liked you. You did a great job of bringing it joy, the mother just wants something different. It’s nothing against you.” Lion explains.
I watch as the child runs to get the attention of human dude. They’ve found what they were looking for. The human dude follows the child to the tanks and I watch as the child touches the glass and exclaims, “That one!” Human dude then reaches into the tanks and pulls out the child’s desired animal and places a shelled animal into a holed box. I watch as the three make their way back to the front of the store, all while human dude goes over the proper way to take care of a ‘turtle’. “Please don’t tell me those humans just adopted a turd.” Lion exclaims laughing. “Turtle.” I correct him. “I know, I’m only making fun” Lion giggles and walks away with his tail swaying in the air.
I enjoy the excitement coming from the mini human as human dude hands over the box to the mother. Human dude opens the door for the mother and wishes them a good day. The child makes eye contact with me for the last time, mini human removes the wet hand from its mouth. “Bye, bye, bye, bye..” the child starts chanting to me waving. Last thing I see of the child is their slobbered hand glistening from the outdoor light. Despite the child being outside of the store, I can still hear it chanting until it plops into the mother’s vehicle.
