I return to my now mostly dried mush of food but become distracted when I see the human dude walking up from his car. A bit of excitement rushes through my body and I instantly prance to the door of my cage. “Please let me out, please let me out.” I repeat over and over. “Chill,” Lion says poking his head out from his box bed. “I’m sure he’ll let you out along with me and a couple of others for a little while,” Lion stretches and lets out a huge yawn. I don’t pay a lot of mind to Lion since it’s confirmed that human dude will let me free.
Human dude unlocks the door and I hear the sound of keys land on the counter. I can also hear the sleepiness in his voice as he mumbles quietly to himself as if he’s trying not to disturb the other creatures that may be sleeping still. Personally, I don’t care about whether or not anyone else is asleep. I want out! I grow impatient as I watch the human dude through shelves and other cages lazily move boxes to the back and get things set up at a desk.
I roll my eyes and run to get a drink of water in a hurry not wanting to miss any chances of being free. I quench my thirst and immediately return to the cage door. Now I can’t see human dude at all. I couldn’t have missed him. “Where is he?” I asked Lion in a slight panic. “Don’t worry, he’s probably still getting the shop set up. He’s kind of hitting the end of his life span so he tends to work slow.” Lion answers. “Shop?” I question. “Yeah, the shop.” Lion answers half expecting me to already know what in the actual heck a “shop” is. I stare at him with my puzzled face. Lion sighs, “Oh, boy..” He gets up and makes some slow laps around his cage as he explains that a shop is where other humans come to buy you, and how nobody ever knows where an animal goes once they’ve been “adopted”.
The word, “adopted” is the scariest word I could have added to my vocabulary today. “Has anyone ever come back after being adopted?” I ask. “None that I’ve heard of, some of the animals here claim that the humans who adopt you will take you to an amazing place for you to be pampered and gain some happy pounds. Others say that they take you to their home to EAT YOU!” Lion jumps at his cage causing it to rattle some. I jump in fear and flopped back into the wood chips. Lion begins laughing hysterically, but i don’t find this funny even the slightest. I’m fricking terrified for my life now! “No, no, I’m only kidding.” Lion assures me through laughs. “So, what actually happens to us?” I question unintentionally raising my voice. “I honestly don’t know.” Lion answers me in a more serious tone.
I shake the cedar chips from my fur and look for the human dude. I begin wondering if it’s such a good idea for me to get out of this cage. I really don’t want some weirdo seeing how adorable I am and start thinking about how adorable of a snack I may be. I know Lion was only joking about people adopting just to eat us, but now i’m shaken by the fact that someone can come in at any moment and decide to take me wherever without me having any sort of clue of what their intentions are. On that note, I hop back into my hammock in attempt to sleep off the new worries Lion has filled my mind with.
I can’t seem to do anything but lay in my swaying hammock with my eyes wide open. I poke my head out and eye on the individual wood chips below and sigh. Just then, I could smell and hear the human dude approaching my cage. He leans over to check on me, I close my eyes hoping that maybe he will leave me be in my time of stress. “Awh, sleepy girl.” human dude whispers. He turns around and I open my eyes. “Let’s get you out of there, Lion.” Human dude quietly opens the door to Lion’s abode. I watch as Lion rubs his body against human dude’s legs. “Kiss ass.” I think to myself as Lion stands on his back feet and licks human dude’s fingers. Lion then runs around the corner as if he’s after something.
My eyes shut as human dude turns back to my cage. I lay still like a toy and human dude pulls the door open to my cage. My heart accelerates once I feel my hammock start to sway once again. “What is he-” I think to myself a second before he starts to stroke my fur gently. It’s honestly so relaxing as he uses a couple of his fingers to rub on my head and neck. I get shivers from the sensation but can’t seem to want to expose my actual consciousness. Another positive is that his body odor isn’t as strong as it was last night, therefore isn’t burning at my nose. The human dude removes his hand and gently closes the door to my cage. I wait until I hear him make his way back to his seat before revealing my eyes once again.
Lion briefly gallops towards my cage with a toy in his mouth, “What are you doing, I thought you wanted to roam for a little while?” He questions pass his full mouth. I tuck my head into my hammock trying to ignore Lion. “Is it because of my jokes from earlier?” Lion asks, his voice still muffled. I don’t answer him. “Look,” He spits his toy out. “I was only kitten around with you! Get it? Kitten?” Lion asks giggling. I don’t get it and I don’t want to. Lion starts to paw at the toy causing it to jingle some. “Some of the animals that live here are never adopted, they spend their entire lives here.” Lion explains, “The ones who are taken home by the humans are considered lucky. I really didn’t mean to make you worry about it.”
I poke my head out of the hammock to examine his face, he doesn’t seem to be messing with me anymore, though I still don’t reply with anything. “Please, get out of bed and come play. We’re the only animals who aren’t sleeping in, I need to socialize with someone!” Lion exclaims in a whiney voice. “Okay.” I slump out of the hammock and let my body thud onto the wood chips. I look in the direction of the human dude but he doesn’t seem to notice me. I set my paws up on one of the bars and it rattles a little bit. I use the rattling to my advantage and start to scratch at the bars which quickly gets human dude’s attention.
I wait patiently in front of my cage door as he saunters over. Lion follows alongside of the human dude with his toy between his teeth once again. Lion drops the toy and begins pawing at it side to side as human dude opens my cage, “Oh, you’re awake, I’m sure you’re ready to be out of there by now.” Human dude says as he reaches in and lightly lifts me up to his chest. “Oh yes.” I say mischievously.
