Venus: Part 1

Faint noises emerge from what seems like nothing, I close my eyes attempting to ease back into the euphoric vibrations of sleep. Gleams of light pass over my eyelids causing them to shoot open, now i’m significantly more aware of my surroundings. It’s merely dim now that my eyes have adjusted, a couple of toys lay on the side of me, though I am not even the slightest bit interested in playing with them in this setting. I notice there’s a lot of paper-like strips in here, all around me actually; some even in my fur. I shake everything off and notice small pieces of cedar chips fall from my fluff. A great wave of worry finally passes over me as I realize that my siblings are missing.. Or i’m missing. As all of these thoughts are flowing through my head at hypersonic speed, unfamiliar smells are pouring in just as fast.

I come to terms that i’m currently being carried by a human due to the his body odor and i’m in a heavy paper made container. Already overwhelmed with the fact that I have no earthly idea of where the hell I am or where fate is taking me; where my family is or who is the human carrying me. I don’t recognize their scent whatsoever, though, fragrances of the human lady that helped my mother raise us still lingered towards the roof of this prison. I lift my upper body the best that I possibly can and place my front paws on the wall for support. Assuming that where I’m heading is far from the environment I have grown fond of, I want to savor the sweet smells of the hands that helped raise me and my siblings in my mother’s time of need. Just as i’m starting to connect to the part of my life that’s soon to be left behind, my container is practically dropped on the floor causing my body to flop over.

Scents of the human lady subside as blinding light radiates into my once dimmed setting, I squint trying to focus in on what’s happening. Almost instantly a hand reaches in and i’m now face to face with a human dude. My heart accelerates as my eyes adjust. Human dude appears to be smiling but surrounding his smile is what makes my heart drop, it seems that he has attached an animal (maybe?) to his face. I squirm to escape the grasp he has around my body. “Shhh shh shh, it’s okay, it’s okay.” human dude half whispers as he’s trying to avoid dropping me. He scratches behind my head and I melt with instant nostalgia. Mother would pull us back into the nest by our scruffs when it is sleeping/feeding time or when we’ve crawled too far from her. Always so protective.

I decide to calm down and thoroughly examine human dude’s facial features, he has wrinkles around his eyes and across his head. What once looked like roadkill on his face was now clearly strands of thick hair sprouting from his chin and lip area. I’m most definitely relieved. He begins to talk to me some more, though I hardly understand any of what he’s rambling about or i’m just not listening due to the most relaxing feeling of having someone softly scratch on me. I almost steadily decided that maybe things are not going to be as terrible as I had anticipated before, and that maybe it is okay. I feel sleep taking my body over once again, but only briefly before the human dude starts to walk to the other side of the room with the top quarter of my body over his shoulder.

We walk by multiple cages and I can barely make out what looks to be other animals, some sleeping, some watching as the human dude carries me. I have never seen such living oddities in my life, not to mention the noises some of them make. The human dude places me in a white, thin, barred cage with cedar wood chips and a bowl of wet food alongside of a cylinder container with a long metal nozzle. There’s definitely water in there, that’s one thing i’m pretty sure of. My feet land on the cushy cedar chips. Before I can completely turn around, the human dude had already latched the cage door shut. I stand up and set my paws against the door hoping that just maybe my body weight will be enough to push my way through the door. Not even a budge, I’m far too petite, sadly. I attempt to squeeze my face through the bars but the only result was failure.

Finally I lose hope of any chances trying to escape and instead focus on exploring my new home. The cedar wood is comforting, it’s the biggest contributor to this place feeling anything like home.
